1/14 ARTY FUN OF NOTE

ARTY FUN OF NOTE
Hi from the Cambridgeport School Arts Committee. It's that random time of the week where I attempt to inspire you to add some arty fun in your life. I try to mention the family-friendly, affordable, and Cambridgeport School area events mostly, but I throw in some other fun, because I have ARTistic license here.
Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that. – MLK Jr.
CRAFTY MLK JR DAY OF SERVICE IN CAMBRIDGE
You can register to volunteer for Cambridge's MLK Day of Service. This is always a popular event, filling the Sr. Center and City Hall with people of all ages from all over the city working together to sew blankets, sort food for food pantries, make hundreds of Valentines for elders, and put together activity kits for children in hospitals. Make Cambridge a better place between 2-5pm on Monday. Register here.
ARTY MLK JR IN BOSTON
Meanwhile, across the river, the MFA is always free on MLK Jr. Day. From 10am-4:45 Sunday you can celebrate his legacy with performances, art-making activities, gallery tours, and more.
Also Sunday, at the JFK Presidential Library & Museum from 10:30-11:30AM you can groove to some amazing African drumming for free as Benkadi Drum and Dance group is performing traditional rhythms and movements from Mali and Guinea.
Jordan Hall is where MLK Jr. spoke when he came to Boston, and he met Coretta Scott on the steps there. She eventually became his wife and the mother of their four children. If you get the $15 tickets at 2pm, you too can go to Jordan Hall in their honor and hear the Boston Children's Chorus (BCC) perform "Only Love."
ICE ICE BABY
American Dental Partners is sponsoring a cool event at the Peabody Essex Museum on Saturday. The family oriented play date from 1-3 will show you Chill out with chainsaws, chisels and professional ice carver Don Chapelle. Watch the artist demonstrate the tools of the trade and create your own ice piece to add to the collaborative sculpture.
